Wabbaseka native plans art contest, Black History event

Jason Irby, an author and Wabbaseka native, will present a youth art contest at the fifth annual Arkansas Heritage Celebration of Black History Month.

The celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library and Learning Center at Little Rock.

Art contest prizes will be $100 – first place; $50 – second place; and $25 – third place, according to a news release.

There’s no entry fee. Youth from fifth grade through junior high school may enter the art contest. They must email an image of the artwork to: jasonirbyinnovationfoundation@gmail.com . Contestants must include their name, mailing address, email address, contact phone number and the name of the artwork, according to the news release.

By entering the contest, contestants agree to release and authorize their art presentation to be used by Jason Irby Innovation Foundation for promotional purposes. Contestants and parents will be required to sign a release document at the event.

Art must be related to Arkansas Black History. Judging will be based on originality, presentation, simplicity and historical presentation, according to the release.

The deadline to submit an entry is Friday, Feb. 21.

Contestants will bring their art to the Hilary Rodham Clinton library Feb. 29, between 9-9:15 a.m.

Contestants must be present to win and must present original artwork that was submitted by email.

The Arkansas Heritage Celebration of Black History Month is sponsored by Jason Irby Innovation Foundation, University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of Mass Communications and the Central Arkansas Library System.
