UP offering free train rides with safety observance Friday

Free train rides will be offered Friday morning in Pine Bluff as part of the annual UP Cares safety program here, according to Union Pacific Railroad Senior Special Agent John L. Schumacher.

UP Cares activities include grade crossing enforcement with local, county and state law enforcement agencies, and safety trains that provide local residents a firsthand look at what locomotive engineers see daily while they operate trains through a community.

Here, UP and Pine Bluff police will be working jointly in ticketing motorists who violate crossing laws, as the program’s aim is to reduce the number of crossing accidents.

Persons wishing to ride a train are asked to gather at the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historical Museum in the old Union Depot on East Fourth Avenue and State Street between 7:30 and 8 a.m. The trains will travel around the city and then return to the depot. The rides will be available until 11 a.m. or so.
