UP grant to benefit Alex Foundation, 2 McGehee schools

Union Pacific Railroad will present the Alex Foundation with a $5,000 grant award at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at McGehee High School, a foundation spokesman said in a news release.

The award is for the foundation’s STE+AM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art + Architecture and Math) initiative and will be used at Conner Junior High School and McGehee High School, two of the foundation’s STE+AM sponsored schools.

“The primary objective of the initiative is to introduce students to key ways science, technology, engineering, art and math are incorporated into an architectural career,” the spokesman said. “Students are guided through understanding the application of basic concepts of necessity, proportion, scale, physics and aesthetics in the design and build process.”

The Alex Foundation was established in 2010 in honor of Alex Courtney who majored in architecture.

“The Alex Foundation mission is to engage, engender and enlighten students to pursue careers and entrepreneurial opportunities in architecture and design through mentoring, strengthening their capacity, and supporting their educational attainment and continued advancement to meet domestic and global challenges,”the spokesman said.
