The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff announced the successful completion of its 2025 STEM Summer Institute, a five-week program designed to inspire, challenge and equip the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers and leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This year’s institute brought together 31 students from across Arkansas and several out-of-state locations, according to a news release.

During the session, students engaged in intensive coursework in chemistry, biology, mathematics, technical writing and an introduction to computer science, along with a college survival skills class that focused on leadership, communication and community engagement.

In addition, participants attended speaker sessions featuring professionals from STEM industries, higher education and community leadership roles, offering insight into career pathways and personal success strategies.

Each day began with morning physical fitness sessions to promote wellness and teamwork. A highlight of the program was an enrichment trip to NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Biloxi, Miss., where youth witnessed cutting-edge aerospace research and explored career opportunities in space science and engineering.

The institute culminated in student-led project presentations, in which participants proposed innovative solutions to ongoing challenges in their communities.

The purpose of the UAPB STEM Summer Institute is to provide high-achieving students with advanced STEM enrichment that goes beyond the traditional classroom experience.

The program aims to:

Strengthen STEM proficiency and critical thinking skills;

Foster creativity and innovation, problem-solving with real-world relevance;

Build leadership, teamwork and communication skills; and

Inspire students to pursue higher education and STEM-related careers.

“Programs like the STEM Summer Institute are critical to preparing our students for the future,” said Charles R. Colen Jr., principal investigator.

“By challenging them academically, physically, and creatively, we equip them to not only excel in STEM fields but also to make meaningful contributions to their communities.”

Anissa Evans, principal investigator, added, “The growth we see in our scholars during this short time is extraordinary. They leave more confident, more capable, and more determined to pursue excellence in STEM.”

The UAPB STEM Summer Institute is part of the university’s ongoing commitment to expand access to high-quality STEM education and create pathways to success for all students.
