UAPB Wind Symphony, Concert Band to perform

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Music Department will present the “Marches in March” concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7. The public is invited and admission is free.

The UAPB Wind Symphony and UAPB Concert Band will perform in the concert at the auditorium of the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts building.

“The concert will feature marches of the ‘March King’ himself, John Phillip Sousa,”a spokesman said in a news release.

“The musical form of the concert march has always and continues to be a stalwart in American music,” the spokesman said. “From military marches to dance marches to circus marches, Americans have grown up listening and being entertained by the performances of marches. The true ‘march music era’ existed from 1850 to 1940s as it slowly became shadowed by the coming of a new form of music called ‘jazz.’ During this era, there were many American march composers, such as Henry Fillmore, John Phillip Sousa, Albert C Sweet, and Karl L. King, to name a few.”

The UAPB Wind Symphony is under the direction of John R. Graham. Graham received his undergraduate degree in music education from the University of Central Arkansas. Graham also earned his master’s degree in music education from the University of Central Arkansas.

The UAPB Concert Band is under the direction of Harold J. Fooster Jr. and Darry Evans. Fooster received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Henderson State University and a Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas.

Evans received his Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Grambling State University and his Master of Music Degree from Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
