Women’s golf is making a return to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff athletic department.
The university announced the addition of the sport Tuesday, marking the first time in more than 20 years the school has sponsored a team for women. According to a news release, UAPB is initiating a search committee to identify a head coach who will recruit student-athletes to begin play in the fall semester.
“We are excited to offer this opportunity for women to compete in collegiate level golf and are looking forward to establishing a strong and competitive program,” said UAPB Athletic Director Chris Robinson. “Golf is a lifelong sport, and we have observed a growing number of girls and women engaging in regular play each year. I am confident that our new coach will offer an exceptional student-athlete experience for our golfers and build a program that brings pride to the University.”
UAPB now has 15 total intercollegiate athletic teams, golf becoming the eighth for women.

The addition of women’s golf comes on the heels of back-to-back SWAC championships for the UAPB men’s team, which has resulted in two trips to the NCAA regional tournament.
“Golden Lions Athletics is dedicated to nurturing well-rounded student-athletes who excel both on and off the golf course,” said senior woman administrator Betty Hayes-Anthony. “Our coach and staff cultivate a culture of excellence, emphasizing their sport, academics, career planning and community service.”
Southeast Arkansas College in May announced its addition of men’s and women’s golf for this school year.
