Semiyah Smith, a sophomore majoring in hospitality and tourism management at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, was recently elected to the National Society for Minorities in Hospitality’s National Board.
Her appointment as chair for the southern region was made after the 35th annual NSMH National Conference and Career Fair following a strenuous interview process, according to associate professor Suzzette Shaw Goldmon, program coordinator for UAPB’s hospitality and tourism management program.
“Semiyah is the first UAPB student ever to be elected to this position,” Goldmon said. “I am ecstatic that this enthusiastic scholar will be building upon her leadership skills. Among other responsibilities, she will be planning the regional and national conferences for students across the country. It has been a pleasure to work with Semiyah and have her as a part of our program.
Smith will be responsible for leading student chapters across the southern region, organizing innovative regional meetings and conferences, providing additional help and support on the national board, recruiting others to join NSMH and representing the southern region at national board meetings.
NSMH’s southern region consists of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Smith serves as vice chair of the UAPB-NSMH chapter, which participates in recruiting activities and student functions on campus. She said she was inspired to run for the national board position once she understood the goals of NSHM, which include advancing the careers of minority students in the hospitality industry by providing professional development, networking opportunities and career resources.
“The interview process was both exhilarating and reassuring,” she said. “I felt more confident knowing I had prepared thoroughly and by remaining patient and staying humble and grounded through prayer. I highlighted my values and goals that aligned with those of the board, ensuring that my passion and commitment to the organization’s mission stood out among candidates from across the country and southern region.”
As the first UAPB student to hold this national position, her goal is to continue to have faith that God’s plan for her will work out.
“With unwavering faith, dedication and passion, I look forward to leaving a lasting impact and inspiring others to dream big, lead boldly and serve with heart,” she said.
Smith credits faculty and staff at the UAPB School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences with pushing her toward success in her career field.
“Ms. Annette Fields, instructor/counselor and interim director of the Dr. Carolyn F. Blakely Honors Program, saw resilience in me and directed me toward the hospitality major,” she said. “Dr. Nina Lyon-Bennett, assistant dean for academics for SAFHS, took a chance and invested in my future, showing me how far this career could take me. And Dr. Goldmon instills encouragement and provides opportunities for me to grow through hands-on experiences. It was through these mentors that I was introduced to NSMH.”
After graduation, Smith plans to build a network of restaurants across the U.S., establish nonprofit organizations around the world to help provide housing for the homeless and launch small businesses that contribute meaningfully to communities and create lasting positive change.
