UAPB softball shut out again by Missouri State, Northwestern State

The second day of the City of Lights Classic didn’t go any better for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team than the first.

UAPB lost 9-0 to Missouri State in six innings and 13-0 to host Northwestern State in five innings at the Lady Demon Diamond in Natchitoches, La. UAPB (2-10) managed five hits between the two games after these teams held the Lady Lions to one total hit on Friday, but UAPB has now been shut out in its past six games.

Missouri State (11-6) led 1-0 until it scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Second baseman Emily Gerardy and right fielder Emily Chadwick each delivered two-RBI hits during the inning, a single for Gerardy and a triple for Chadwick. The Lady Bears added two runs in the top of the sixth to move into run-rule position.

Kaydrian Fields (0-2) pitched most of the game for UAPB with Karis Stewart recording the final out. Fields allowed eight runs, though only two were earned on a day UAPB committed two errors, on eight hits and six walks with two strikeouts.

Paityn Engemann (1-2) held UAPB to two hits and two walks with two strikeouts in six innings.

Northwestern State (8-13) didn’t waste time, scoring seven runs in the first inning and six in the second. Center fielder JT Smith led the Lady Demons, hitting 2 for 3 with three RBI and a run. Both hits were triples. Three other players drove in two runs each.

UAPB starting pitcher Danika Bryant (0-1) didn’t make it past the first inning, recording two outs while allowing six runs on one hit and five walks. Heidi Price pitched one inning and allowed seven runs on seven hits before Traelen Humphrey pitched a scoreless final 2 1/3.

Northwestern State used two pitchers, with starter Grace Birk (1-3) pitching the first four innings and allowing three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

The Lady Lions will wrap up their weekend in Natchitoches against Northwestern State at 11 a.m. Sunday.
