Several local youth and adults are on a journey to healthier living thanks to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Kids in the Kitchen program
UAPB Kids in the Kitchen was an interactive program at the Pine Bluff Main Library, 600 S. Main St., according to a news release.
The hour-and-a-half weekly sessions were filled with engaging nutrition lessons, physical activities and healthy snack preparation, according to Angela Howard, a UAPB Agricultural Family Consumer Science Department member and UAPB extension program aide.
This program is one of several events hosted through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). EFNEP provides community education classes for income-eligible youth and adults that promote nutrition and physical activity as a means of maintaining a healthy lifestyle free from chronic disease, ensuring a brighter and healthier future for the community, according to the release.
During one of her recent classes, Howard shared handouts and taught the importance of cleanliness, safety and having an adult present while in the kitchen. She also reminded participants to follow directions and have everything needed for a recipe before beginning to prepare it. She encouraged class participation by asking questions and allowing the young people to give answers to the best of their ability.

At one point, she led the class in a “germ buster” exercise that included a “germinator punch.” Students stood, took a boxing stance with hands balled up into fists and used their arms to punch straight ahead and up in the air.
Howard also teaches a class at the Watson Chapel Public Library for adults interested in learning about nutrition and healthy living.
