The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff needs a new offensive coordinator.

Alabama State on Thursday announced it has hired UAPB offensive coordinator Tony Hull to the same position, a move which had been rumored for weeks.

Hull served as UAPB’s offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He and Head Coach Alonzo Hampton previously worked together at the University of Louisiana at Monroe until Hampton took over at UAPB ahead of the 2023 season. Hull spent that year as co-offensive coordinator at Grambling State under Hue Jackson before coming to Pine Bluff in 2024.

In Hull’s two seasons, the Golden Lions ranked fifth and ninth in scoring offense and sixth both years in total offense. They ranked seventh and eighth in rushing offense. Under Hull, who also coached the quarterbacks, UAPB finished third and seventh in passing offense.

Mekhi Hagens, who started at quarterback in 2024, finished second in passing yards per game and third in passing touchdowns. Last year’s starter, Christian Peters, finished fourth in passing yards per game and fifth in touchdowns.

Alabama State will be Hull’s third consecutive stop at a SWAC school, where he will now work under Eddie Robinson Jr., the league’s longest-tenured head coach.

Last season, ASU led the SWAC in scoring, total and passing offense while finishing second in rushing offense under offensive coordinator Chris Barnette. The Montgomery Advertiser reported Barnette is expected to take the same position at North Carolina Central.

The next UAPB offensive coordinator will be the third under Hampton. Bobby Acosta held the position during Hampton’s inaugural season.

UAPB will host Hull’s new team for homecoming this fall on Oct. 17.
