UAPB men winless entering Thanksgiving break

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men’s basketball team will begin its Thanksgiving break without a win.

UAPB lost 111-84 on Sunday at Miami (Ohio) at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio.

Miami (5-0) shot 56.3 percent from the field, second only to SMU’s 56.9 percent against UAPB, to become the third opponent out of the past four to break 100 and the first to exceed 106.

Junior guard Evan Ipsaro led the RedHawks with 20 points with four others scoring 10 or more points. Eight players combined to make 11 3-pointers.

UAPB (0-8) shot 40.6 percent from the field, its second-best percentage this season. Senior forward Jaquan Scott led the Golden Lions with 19 points and 12 rebounds with three other starters scoring at least 10 points. The other starter, Alex Mirhosseni, finished 0 of 5 from the field after playing just 16 minutes.

True freshman Jai’Chaunn Hayes stepped up with a career-high 15 points off the bench. He, Ramel Lloyd Jr. and Ahmad Johnson combined to provide UAPB 30 bench points, shattering the season-best 17 bench points UAPB had against Vanderbilt.

UAPB led by as much as 6-2 early in the game, but the RedHawks answered with a 13-0 run for the game’s only lead change. Miami went on to lead 56-36 at halftime and cruised in the second half, reaching triple digits with 3:08 remaining.

This was the eighth of 11 straight road games with which UAPB is starting the season. The Golden Lions have been playing virtually nonstop. Entering Sunday, only Coppin State had played eight games this season after playing on Saturday.

The Golden Lions now have a week and a half off before returning to action on Dec. 3 at Illinois-Chicago.
