UAPB men drop opener at Washington

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men’s basketball team never led during its season opener late Monday night.

UAPB fell 94-50 to the University of Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.

Washington (1-0) freshman forward Hannes Steinbach scored a game-high 21 points with seven rebounds and six assists. Three other Huskies scored in double figures, including sophomore forward Bryson Tucker, who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

UAPB (0-1) senior guard Alex Mirhosseini and forward Jaquan Scott scored 13 points apiece, with Scott adding six rebounds. Senior guard Quion Williams added 10 points. UAPB’s bench combined for 2 points.

The Golden Lions’ 50 points were their fewest in a game since scoring 43 at Texas on Dec. 10, 2022. UAPB shot 25.4 percent from the floor and 25.8 percent from 3-point range.

The Huskies shot 49.2 percent from the floor and made 10 3-pointers. Washington outrebounded UAPB 53-32 and outscored the Golden Lions 36-12 in the paint.

UAPB committed 24 fouls, leading to 33 Washington free throw attempts. Six Golden Lions finished with three or more fouls.

Steinbach scored the game’s first 4 points, but Mirhosseini scored the next 4 to tie the game. Washington answered with a 7-0 run and led the rest of the night.

UAPB cut the deficit to 14-11 before the Huskies pulled away with a 27-7 run over the final 14:37 of the first half. The Golden Lions never got closer than a 21-point deficit in the second half.
