The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, in partnership with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, hosted its first Gen-Cyber Camp, introducing 21 students to cybersecurity.
The weeklong camp gave participants hands-on experience in identifying cyber risks, protecting personal information and understanding the importance of cybersecurity in everyday life, according to a news release.
Students explored topics such as online safety, digital ethics and real-world cyber threats, all while developing skills that will serve them in school, college and future careers.
“This program was about more than just learning how to protect devices — it was about empowering students to think critically, collaborate, and see themselves as future leaders in tech,” said Mekale Carter, cybersecurity coordinator.
Supported by the National Security Agency, the Gen-Cyber initiative is part of a nationwide effort to expand access to cybersecurity education, particularly among underrepresented and underserved communities, according to the release. The camp also featured interactive sessions led by cybersecurity professionals and collaborative group discussions. Each student left the camp with a personalized notebook containing all exercises, key vocabulary and foundational concepts they can continue to build upon.
