Two University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football players received All-Southwestern Athletic Conference honors, the conference announced Monday.
Junior running back Jaylen Jennings and linebacker Danarius Hilliard were named to the All-SWAC First Team.
Jennings stepped up with expected starting running backs BJ Curry, a preseason All-SWAC selection, and Za’Marion Webber out with injuries. Jennings rushed for 936 yards this season, second in the SWAC only to fellow first team selection Ahmad Miller from Jackson State. He scored 11 rushing touchdowns, also second in the league.
His best performance came the same day as Webber’s injury. Jennings rushed for 226 yards and four touchdowns against Lincoln (Calif.) in UAPB’s home opener. He rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in just five carries against Westgate Christian.
Jennings finished the season strong, rushing for 114 yards and a touchdown against Prairie View A&M and 133 yards and a score against Alabama State, his best outings against SWAC opposition. He also caught a touchdown pass against Florida A&M.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
Hilliard tallied 90 tackles this season, second only to Bethune-Cookman defensive back Antwone Watts, another first teamer. His 8.2 tackles per game tied him for first in the SWAC. He led UAPB with 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also forced two fumbles and recovered one.
The junior college transfer had five games with 10 or more tackles, including a season-high 15 tackles against Florida A&M. Against Bethune-Cookman, he made 10 tackles with a season-high 1.5 sacks for 12 yards. He also had two tackles for loss against Southern. He had at least one tackle for loss in seven of UAPB’s final eight games this season.
UAPB did not have any Second Team selections. The Golden Lions’ two All-SWAC selections is a drop from last year’s three, though only one was a first teamer. UAPB last had two first team selections in 2023.
