A second big piece of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff secondary will test the transfer portal next month.
Sophomore cornerback Zach Williams announced on social media Tuesday he intends to transfer when the portal opens on Jan. 2.
Williams made 25 tackles, including five for loss with one sack this season at cornerback. He also intercepted a pass during the Southern Heritage Classic against Alcorn State. He made a season-high six tackles against Central Arkansas but finished the season strong, making 15 of his tackles in UAPB’s last four games.
The Memphis native is a former walk-on who earned a scholarship and a starting role in the secondary. As a freshman in 2024, he was the team’s sixth-leading tackler with 38 and an interception.
Williams is the second notable defensive back to announce his transfer intentions since the end of the season, which came on Nov. 22 at Alabama State. Kristian Gammage, a nickelback, also intends to transfer.
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
His announcement brings UAPB’s expected portal losses to nine. Other recent announcements came from wide receiver Kylon Dupree on Nov. 26 and defensive lineman Jaiden Crawford on Nov. 27.
Dupree, a redshirt freshman from Memphis, appeared in two games this season but did not catch a pass. He was not initially expected to play this season but took the No. 17 jersey UAPB lost graduate transfer Jalyn Witcher for the season.
Crawford, a junior, made 14 tackles with one for a loss. He made a season-high four tackles against Florida A&M.
The nine players who have declared their intentions to transfer now include three wide receivers and four defensive backs.
