Chef Paula Mayo, a University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Dining Services team member, has earned honors in four Aramark Culinary Chef Tournaments, gaining second place in the finals recently.
“Her exceptional culinary skills and innovative approach earned her a coveted spot in the February 2025 finals, where she placed second,” according to a news release. “Mayo’s journey to the finals has been a testament to her determination and hard work.”
Mayo competed against some of the best chefs in the region and impressed judges with her creativity, precision and dedication to the culinary arts, according to the release.
Her winning dishes showcased a blend of traditional flavors and modern techniques.
“I was incredibly honored and excited to represent UAPB Dining in the finals,” said Mayo. “Competing and winning in these tournaments has been a dream come true, and I am grateful for the support of my colleagues and the university community. I enjoy showcasing my skills on a larger stage and bringing home the title.”
Independent reporting for Pine Bluff & Jefferson County since 1879.
According to a news release, Mayo was one of 35 skilled chefs who competed in a high-stakes culinary competition this past fall and spring led by South Region Culinary Director Chef Ben Hernandez in collaboration with marketing, operations and culinary leaders of the South.
The competition concluded Feb. 28 at the University of Mississippi, where the final showdown took place. Chef Quentin Tacker of the University of Dallas faced off against Mayo. Both chefs were tasked with creating a signature stir-fry. Competitors went head-to-head at a 5-foot round grill that challenged their creativity and skill.
“We are immensely proud of Chef Mayo’s achievements,” said Avery Shelton, food service director at UAPB. “Her success is a testament to her hard work, passion, and the high standards we uphold at UAPB.”
He was confident Mayo would continue to make UAPB proud, Shelton said.
“The UAPB community stands united in support of Chef Mayo for her reaching this significant milestone in her culinary career. Her success brings honor to her and our entire community, filling us with a sense of pride and accomplishment,” according to the release.
