UAPB avoids softball sweep with 10th inning win

It took extra innings to decide a winner on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, but the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff softball team found its first conference win.

UAPB defeated Southern 2-0 in 10 innings to avoid a sweep in its opening conference series after dropping both games of Monday’s doubleheader.

Pitcher Kayla Adams (2-6) pitched 10 shutout innings with 18 strikeouts while allowing 7 hits and 1 walk. She also delivered the game-winning hit, an RBI triple in the 10th which scored substitute shortstop Lyric Perry.

Second baseman Allyncia King added an RBI single to drive Adams home for some insurance as UAPB (3-13, 1-2 SWAC) bounced back to win after losing 4-0 and 7-3 on Monday.

Southern (8-11, 2-1) got two-hit outings from three players but stranded nine runners on base.

Lady Jaguars pitcher Miranda Roldan (3-1), who earned the win in the opening game of the series, matched Adams with 10 innings Tuesday, allowing one earned run on 4 hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts.
