UAPB among schools to host STEM event for girls

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff is among 11 institutions chosen to host a girls STEM conference.

The event at UAPB will be held Saturday, April 11, for girls in grades 10-12 in high school and freshman through sophomore years in college.

Interested girls can go to the Arkansas STEM Coalition website at www.arkansasstemcoalition.com/arkansas-stem-centers/ to find the nearest STEM Center University contact information about how to register.

The Arkansas STEM Coalition, in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Higher Education and the Arkansas Department of Career Education, announced a $76,000 award from the Carl D. Perkins Technical Education Act of 2006 will support 11 STEM Leadership for Girls Conferences.

The purpose is to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The conference will include STEM activities for 50 or more girls in a workshop format applying topics such as robotics, coding, engineering design, space science, nanoscience, chemical reactions and 3-D visualization.

“The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff continues to expand its portfolio of innovative STEM programs to help ensure a diverse and well-prepared U.S. STEM workforce,” said Mary Benjamin, vice chancellor for Research, Innovation and Economic Development. “The 2015 STEM Leadership for Girls Grant helps to address the needs to tap the talent of the girls who will become the women of tomorrow with engaging and productive STEM careers.”
