UAM to continue military courses

The University of Arkansas at Monticello will continue offering its students a minor in military science and a minor in leadership with the option of participating in ROTC, according to Interim Chancellor Jay Jones.

Previously, an announcement said the UAM program would close at the end of the spring 2015 semester and consolidate its ROTC program with the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

“We believe it is important to maintain an ROTC presence on campus,” Jones said of UAM.

Army ROTC courses have been offered at UAM through a written agreement with UAPB since 2005. According to the agreement, students may enroll at UAM and earn a minor in military science, a four-year program of study. A student may also select the leadership minor, a 19-hour academic minor that includes two years of coursework from the military science curriculum as well as courses from other academic programs of study.

“The ROTC leadership has indicated to us that our campus has produced quality officers and that it is eager to continue to offer the program at Monticello,” Jones said. “We want to make sure that the people of Southeast Arkansas are aware of the program and its continued availability. We are very excited to announce that the core ROTC courses are scheduled on the Monticello campus again in the fall.”
