UAM scores 82-69 men’s basketball win over Southwestern Okla.

Behind Jakob Zenon’s 24 points and 13-for-23 three-point shooting, the University of Arkansas at Monticello posted an 82-69 men’s basketball win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday at the Pioneer Event Center in Weatherford, Okla.

Zenon shot 7 for 11, going 5 for 9 from three-point range, and made 5 of 5 free throws for the Boll Weevils (10-15, 6-13 Great American). He grabbed six defensive rebounds and blocked one shot.

Lamont Jackson scored 14 points, Isaac Jackson had 12 points and four rebounds (all on offense), Ashton Price scored 11 points (finished 7 of 8 in free throws) and Josh Smith dropped in 10 (4 of 4 in free throws).

Ty Frierson led Southwestern (10-15, 7-12) with 15 points.

UAM led by as many as 14 points in the first half despite shooting 12 for 31 (38.7%) from the floor, but the Weevils limited the Bulldogs to 8-for-28 (28.6%) shooting. Southwestern closed the deficit to 33-25 at halftime.

UAM led by as many as 15 points before Southwestern cut the lead down to six. Three-point baskets from Zenon and Felix Smedjeback helped the Weevils pull away.

The Weevils made 14 of 23 (60.9%) from the floor in the second half and finished the game 26 for 54 (48.1%). They also connected on 17 of 22 free throws.

Southwestern went 13 for 30 from the perimeter, part of its shooting 23 for 60 (38.3%) from the field. The Bulldogs connected on 10 of 13 free throws.

WOMEN: SWOSU 70, UAM 62

Also Thursday in Weatherford, a 19-12 fourth quarter by Southwestern (11-13, 9-10 Great American) padded its advantage over the Cotton Blossoms (6-19, 1-18).

Alyssa Batton reached a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Long also scored 18 points, going 4 for 4 in free throws.

The lead changed hands 16 times and the game was tied 11 times. UAM last led 44-43 with 3:32 left.

Landry Allen led Southwestern with 15 points. Piper Patterson also had 12 points, Elle Papahronis 11 and Lacy Brough 10 in the win.

UAM’s teams will take on Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday, starting with the women’s game at 1:30 p.m.
