Two arrested after reported disturbance Monday

A reported assault Monday afternoon resulted in the arrest of two people, including one who was in possession of a four-wheeler that had been reportedly stolen last year.

Jeffery McAfee, 45, was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief, and Brandon Cross, 23, was arrested for theft by receiving, according to a probable cause affidavit presented in court Wednesday.

Deputy Prosecutor Nicole Pugh said the incident began when police were sent to a residence in the 7100 block of Jeffcoat Road in response to a reported disturbance.

Cross reportedly told officers that he saw McAfee in his back yard and told him to leave, and a short time later, got a call from someone saying McAfee was at a house at Nell and Nellwood Drive allegedly “burning copper.”

Pugh said Cross drove to that location and while he was there, McAfee allegedly ran into the passenger side of his truck with a Lincoln Continental before leaving.

While at the house on Jeffcoat Road talking to Cross, McAfee was reportedly seen in the back yard and he was taken into custody. Officers later found McAfee’s car which had damage consistent with the damage to Cross’ truck.

Pugh said while officers were talking to McAfee, he reportedly said that Cross had stolen property in his shed, and after Cross gave permission to search, police found an ATV that had been taken apart.

Police checked the vehicle identification number of the ATV and determined that it had been reported stolen in Pine Bluff on Feb. 24, 2011, Pugh said.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $5,000 bond for Cross, who Pugh said had no prior convictions or pending charges, and a $10,000 bond for McAfee, who is currently on probation.

Kearney appointed the Public Defender’s Office to represent both men and told them to come back to court Sept. 5.
