It took one inning Tuesday night for Jackson State to take control of a midweek non-conference clash between two SWAC schools.

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team lost 13-3 in eight innings in Jackson, Mississippi, after allowing 7 runs in the first.

Jackson State (16-4) led 2-0 before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first inning. Six hits and a UAPB error allowed the Tigers to quickly take control of the game. JSU led 9-0 after the second.

UAPB (9-12) got on the board in the top of the third with a two-out rally. Edwin De La Cruz singled to score Gavin Terry and Jalyn Williams, who had both singled earlier in the inning. Those three hits were UAPB’s first of the game.

The Tigers went on to lead 12-3 after the fourth. Neither team scored again until a balk was called against UAPB reliever Kenny Jackson in the bottom of the eighth, allowing Myles White to score and end the game via run rule.

Third baseman Lenny Montesano led Jackson State’s offense, hitting 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs. UAPB leftfielder Darrius Brown hit 1 for 3 and had the only RBI other than De La Cruz’s 2.

Chris Bedgood (1-2) started for UAPB but lasted just three innings before Jackson took over. Bedgood allowed 10 runs on 10 hits. Jackson allowed 1 earned run and 2 unearned runs on five hits.

JSU starter Christian Womble (2-1) went six innings, allowing 3 runs on six hits.

UAPB returns to conference action Friday as the Golden Lions begin a three-game road series at Grambling State.
