Three area girls named All-Stars

The East team for the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star girls basketball game will include three standouts from Southeast Arkansas.

Star City’s Juquecia Chaney, Monticello’s Chelsey Rhodes and Dumas’ Shabr’an Richardson are among 15 named to the East roster for the June 20 game at Bud Walton Arena on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. The Arkansas Activities Association on Monday released the rosters for the boys and girls games.

Chaney, the MVP of the 4A state championship game, averaged 8.4 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in leading the Lady Bulldogs to their first title under coach Becky Brown. She had 13 points and five rebounds in Star City’s 56-34 win over Farmington for the title.

Monticello reached the semifinal round of the 5A state tournament, due in large part to the play of 5-foot-6 guard Rhodes. She averaged 16.1 points, nearly 4 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the Lady Billies, who went 14-0 in the 5A-Southeast Conference.

Richardson led the Lady Cats with 14.9 points, 2.1 steals and 5.6 rebounds at the post. Dumas finished second in the 8-4A Conference and made the state tournament.

The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena. The boys game will immediately follow.
