Summer activities still available for Pine Bluff youth

As summer winds down, many activities for youth are still in full swing, according to area spokesmen. Here are a few local programs geared toward youth:

Boys and Girls Cub

The Boys and Girls Club of Jefferson County, 2701 W. Short Reeker Ave., is sponsoring an eight-week summer program, which will last until Aug. 3. Throughout the program, children will be exposed to computer classes, health classes and field trips. Field trips will include going to the Delta Rivers Nature Center, the movies, and bowling. The daily program begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m. Tutoring is also available.

Also, the Boys and Girls Club will sponsor a computer summer camp for youth in grades five through eight July 9-19. The camp will be held Monday through Thursday from 1-4 p.m. in the Workforce Development Center on the campus of Southeast Arkansas College, 1900 Hazel St. The cost of the camp is $40 and is only for children who are members of the Boys and Girls Club. Thunder Lanes

Thunder Lanes Bowling Alley is giving youth a chance to bowl for free all summer long, a spokesman said. Youth will receive two free games of bowling a day. To receive the free passes, parents must visit the agency’s website www.kidsbowlfree.com/thunderlanesar and register.

First Trinity

The First Trinity Church of God in Christ is hosting a youth program and participating in the USDA Summer Food Service Program. The food program allows participating churches and youth centers to offer free breakfast and lunch to all children free of charge no matter their race, sex, national origin, age or disability.

Facilities participating include First Trinity Church, Merrill Community Center, Chester Hynes Community Center, Healing Place Ministries and Family Community Development Corp.

Police camp

The Pine Bluff Police Department began their second annual Police and Youth Day Camp, which will last until July 13 at Southeast Middle School from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Complementary breakfast, lunch and snacks are served throughout the day.

TOPPS

TOPPS is hosting summer youth programs until Aug. 10 and the locations include TOPPS’ sites at 3512 W. Second Ave. and 1000 Townsend Park Drive. The program is held Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Children will receive help with academics as well as have opportunities to learn about golfing, sewing, cooking and other activities. Seabrook

Seabrook is currently hosting their summer camp program until Aug. 10. The theme for this year is Moving and Grooving. Children are participating in activities such as movie time, field trips and swimming. Third grade children and under visit the White Hall Park once a week and are able to check out books, if they wish. The program is focused on children in grades 4-8. The hours are from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Details: Call 535-6909.

FCDC

Family Community Development Corporation (FCDC), 1006 N Palm St., is holding a youth program for children ages 5-12 until Aug. 10. There will be a variety of activities including computer classes, cooking classes and information about finances. There will be field trips and complementary breakfast and lunch. Every Wednesday children will go to the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Library. Details: Call 850-7094.

Arts center

The Arts and Science Center for Southeast Arkansas held several youth-oriented programs this summer including its Art shops classes and a Living History Theater Camp.
