Student arrested after gun found at school

A student at Pine Bluff High School was arrested Friday after police allegedly found a handgun in his backpack.

Coby Walker, 18, was found under the bleachers at the high school track and allegedly told police he did not want to go to an assembly and was “skipping,” Pine Bluff Police Department Officer Greg Broady said in a report.

Walker was taken to the school office, and Broady was later called to a school parking lot where a person identified only as a “concerned citizen” gave Broady a backpack that allegedly belonged to Walker and was left under the bleachers.

The backpack contained Walker’s school identification, papers, a small amount of suspected marijuana and a black .9-millimeter handgun with 10 rounds in it. A check of the serial number indicated that the gun had not been reported stolen.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $2,500 bond for Walker, who was represented during a court hearing Monday by an attorney from the Bill James Law Firm from Little Rock, after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with possession of a handgun on school property.
