Storm Drain Awareness Program slates ‘Make Your Mark’ effort

The Southeast Arkansas Stormwater Education at the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service is sponsoring the “Make Your Mark” Storm Drain Awareness Program.

The purpose is to get residents and local businesses to help mark storm drains with educational messages about not polluting water flows to waterways, according to a news release.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. the United Way of Southeast Arkansas will host a marking at the Donald W. Renyolds Community Services Building at Pine Bluff. At 1:30 p.m., Lelan Stice, owner of Doctors Orders Pharmacy, will mark a drain at his pharmacy.

“Keep It Clean! Help protect our waterways from pollution and prevent flooding by placing storm drain markers in your neighborhood to increase awareness about allowing only rain to go down the storm drain,” according to the release.

There are several thousand storm drains in Jefferson County. People can learn more about how they work and where they drain to, according to the release.

“Organize an event in your community. Learn more about the program and how you can host a volunteer event for your community or organization,” according to the release.

The Jefferson County Cooperative Extension Service is part of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture which offers its programs to all eligible persons without discrimination.
