Stop harassing our students

Editor, The Commercial:

I am a concerned grandparent. What I am concerned about is the treatment of our students at Watson Chapel High School. I am concerned about all of the write ups that are going on there. I am at the school a lot for various reasons.

I am a retired school teacher. I taught at an inner city middle school for 35 years. Rarely did I write up a student. I handled it myself in the classroom.

I was at Watson Chapel High School a few weeks ago, going to the office, when one of the principals came on the intercom to remind the students that they were not to wear scarfs in school or they would be written up. They write up students for this?

Another day one of the teachers put six students out of her class for laughing. The administration allowed a teacher to put six students out of class at one time. The office was full.

I suggest that the administration not punish our students with in-school detention or cleaning the parking lot Saturday mornings. The administration should talk to the students, put “counseled” on the write up and send the student back to class. If a teacher refuses to accept the student back to class, send the teacher home for insubordination.
