Representatives from Arkansas recently attended the 133rd Associate Council of the National Society United States Daughters of 1812 (U.S.D. 1812) in Washington, D.C., where the state organization received 11 awards.
Awards were presented for the U.S.D.’s work in locating and marking the graves of veterans of the War of 1812 buried in Arkansas, support of veterans, support of schools and championing historical preservation, according to a news release.
State Vice President Kimberley Stout, of the Pine Bluff Simon Bradford Chapter, accepted the awards on behalf of the state society.
The state awards received were:
First place for Ancestor Plaque Project; Overall Best VAVS (Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service) Program; Outstanding Publicity Patriotic Education; Outstanding Classroom Patriotic Education; first place for Patriotic Education; first place for Most Monetary Donations to the USD 1812 Library; first place for Most Insignia Purchased; third place for Fort McHenry Programs; first place for Best Print Media Presence; first place for Best Overall Report to the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House; and third place for Most State Members Attended Community Patriotic Events.
The U.S.D. 1812 has more than 160 chapters across the nation. Arkansas U.S.D. 1812 has an ongoing effort to mark the graves of 1812 veterans buried in the state, which has been estimated to be about 1,000.
Any woman over 18 years of age who is of direct lineal descent from an ancestor who rendered civil, military or naval service to the country during the years 1784-1815 is eligible for membership. Details: Sheila Beatty-Krout at beattykrout@suddenlink.net.
