Prairie View scores three in eighth to beat UAPB
Prairie View broke up a tied game in the eighth inning with three runs to beat the Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team 5-2.
The game kept UAPB 8-34-1, 6-14 SWAC) two games behind Texas Southern for a spot in the SWAC tournament.
The Lions tied the game at 2 in the seventh inning. With two outs, Chazz Montgomery scored on an error by the shortstop.
But Prairie View (22-220, 13-7) scored three runs on two hits and three walks off reliever Stanten Jones.

Vince Newton started the game for UAPB and went 7 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out five. Jacob Whitney went 3 for 3 with an RBI for the Lions.
Former Lion Forrest named to LSU staff
BATON ROUGE, La. — New LSU men’s basketball coach Johnny Jones announced on Thursday that former Arkansas-Pine Bluff player Shawn Forrest will be joining his staff.
Forrest served the last four years on Jones’ staff at North Texas. Forrest was born in Little Rock and spent six seasons at Arkansas State, including the 2007-08 season as the interim head coach.
Forrest received a Bachelor of Arts from UAPB in 1998.
Pine Bluff Braves dodge Little Rock White Sox
BRYANT — The Pine Bluff Braves and Little Rock White Sox needed only the first inning to determine the final score.
Chris Weast hit a go-ahead RBI single to bat in Chretien Matz that inning and held the White Sox to three hits in a 3-2, five-inning semipro baseball victory Sunday in Ashley Park.
Little Rock’s team includes former minor leaguers and major leaguers. The White Sox also had all three of their hits in the first.
Pine Bluff came back when leadoff man Corey McCoy tripled to right-center and scored on Jerome McCullum’s short grounder. Former UAPB and Detroit Tigers organization player Matz knocked in the tying run.
Arkansas outlasts Florida for extra innings win
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Arkansas broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the 10th, highlighted by a go-ahead pinch hit single by Michael Gunn, as the Razorbacks beat Florida 3-1 on Sunday.
In the bottom of half of the 10th inning, Barrett Astin came into the game and retired Florida (33-12, 12-9 SEC) in order as Arkansas (31-13, 11-10) held on for the series-clinching win.
Hogs sign as free agents
FAYETTEVILLE — A number of players from the Arkansas football team signed free agent contracts with NFL teams after the NFL Draft concluded on Saturday.
Linebacker Jerry Franklin signed a contract with the Denver Broncos. Line backer Jerico Nelson was signed the New Orleans Saints, safety Tramain Thomas was inked by Tampa Bay and cornerback Isaac Madison agreed to a deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
Arkansas guard Grant Cook also received an invitation to participate in a rookie mini-camp with the Green Bay Packers.
