Co-ed softball league registration begins

Registration for the Pine Bluff Parks and Recreation Department’s Co-ed Softball League is under way.

League games will start at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20. The schedule will consist of a double round robin format.

The entry fee of $275 must be paid on or before Aug. 13. The department is accepting all major credit cards for payment of entry fees.

A mandatory coaches’ meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the softball complex.

Golden Lions, Hornets to play on national TV

The SWAC confirmed late Monday that Arkansas-Pine Bluff will play a conference football game on national TV this season.

UAPB’s game at Alabama State has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. ESPNU will broadcast the game.

This will be UAPB’s first nationally televised game since the 2010 season.

Team: Webber to try out for Eagles

PHILADELPHIA — Former Arkansas-Pine Bluff wide receiver Raymond Webber was invited to the Philadelphia Eagles’ minicamp on a tryout basis, the team announced Tuesday.

Webber was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and immediately picked up by the Seattle Seahawks last month. It’s not clear when the Seahawks cut Webber or for what reason.

Webber, who did not immediately return a call from The Commercial on Tuesday,

never played a down during the regular season with the Bucs, suffering a season-ending hamstring injury last preseason. He signed as a free agent out of UAPB in 2011.

Former Jacket named SAU athletic director

MAGNOLIA — Sheridan High School graduate Steve Browning has been named athletic director at Southern Arkansas University.

Browning, who will continue to serve dually as baseball coach, will begin his permanent duties July 1. He served as interim AD since Dec. 1.

Browning has led the Mulerider baseball team since June 2010, leading the club to a Gulf South Conference championship in 2011 and the Great American Conference title this year. SAU also played in an NCAA Division II regional.
