Southwood sets summer reading program

Southwood Elementary School is offering an individualized summer reading program for 30 pre-kindergarten students transitioning to kindergarten in the Pine Bluff School District for the 2017-18 school year.

The SORS program includes online instruction, materials and a personal set of books. Lessons include letter recognition, beginning phonics and sight word recognition. Students will learn to read simple words and short sentences. Teachers will monitor the program and transportation and snacks will be served.

The program will be presented by the University of Central Arkansas Outreach and Community Engagement, and taught by the Institute of Reading Development. It is funded by Title 1 as part of the school’s 2016-17 ACSIP plan, according to a news release.

The 30 slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. A parent meeting is being planned. Details: Crystal Morris or Alicia Whiteside, 870-543-4390.
