Southwood Elementary School will hold its first mid-year parent/teacher conference day from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
The conference will include information about grades, homework, health, behavior, test scores, promotion/retention, common core and class participation.
Although schools are required to schedule two conference days per year where parents visit with their child’s teachers and pick up report cards, a mid-year conference is being held because Southwood is looking for ways to improve school effectiveness, Southwood Principal Alfred Carroll said in a press release.
“Continuous, positive and productive parental involvement is just one of those ways,” Carroll said.
The first required conference is at the end of the first nine weeks grading period, he said.
“By the time the second required conference day comes in the school’s calendar, students are already in crisis and face possible retention. You can’t get the best results if you only focus on minimum standards set by state and federal regulations. The Mid Year Parent/Teacher Conference Day is a part of the school’s ACSIP (Arkansas Comprehensive School Improvement Plan),” he said.
