Nancy Rosen presented the program, Smartphone Smarts, to the Heart-N-Hands Extension Homemakers Club recently.

The meeting and Lady Bug Garden Stake Craft taught by Delores Kelley were held at the Pursuit Church in White Hall, according to a news release.

Research shows that those on their phones excessively are more likely to experience depression, anxiety or other health impacts, according to Rosen’s presentation.

Smartphones were designed to keep users coming back for more. People who get the most of their information from social media are at a higher risk of encountering incorrect information than those who get their information from a variety of sources, according to the presentation.

Don’t use devices to avoid boredom. Dissociation is using scrolling to avoid anxious moments or when overstimulated. AI generated content can include videos that appear to involve well-known politicians or celebrities. People share this as if it is real, according to the presentation.

Healthier scrolling habits were also discussed. Turn off nonessential notifications. Turn on filters for spam calls and text messages. Set timers and screen time limits for activities you use for distraction. Avoid screens at bedtime. Organize your social media. Don’t click on links in text messages that you do not recognize or come from unknown numbers.

In conclusion, Rosen stated that one of the most common concerns about habitual smartphone use is that it interferes with in-person interactions.

Also during the meeting, Sandy Smith, Heart-N-Hands EHC president, reminded the members of upcoming events: March 11 — Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council Spring Workshop at the Wyndham Hotel in North Little Rock, and March 13 — Jefferson County Extension Homemakers Council Fellowship Tour.
