OPINION | LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Sides aren’t free

Editor, The Commercial,

Independence was the rallying call that galvanized American patriots to reject the social, political and economic practices of England. They wanted a more perfect union, and they wanted to be called Americans. As a result of their resolve, we now call our union America and our citizens Americans. On July 4 of each year, we celebrate our independence, but are we truly independent?

Today, most Americans try to define their independence in political terms such as Democrat, Republican, independent, liberal, conservative, moderate, right or left wing. We even identify states as red or blue — labels often used by mainstream media and political pundits to force citizens into choosing sides. Such a myopic view does little to foster unity and social progress. What a paradigm shift! Does anyone want to be identified as an American?

The American experience is deeply rooted in critical and independent thinking. But that type of behavior appears to be missing in our country. To be corralled into choosing sides is counterproductive, erodes American values and fosters division. With a host of legitimate issues facing our community, state and nation, we cannot afford to have our vision impaired by person or press. The future is in our hands. Our motivation: Establish a more perfect union.
