New Hope AME Church at Sherrill is still awarding scholarships after 32 years. The community is invited to attend the annual scholarship celebration at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26.
“To God Be the Glory for the wonderful things He has done! In 1985, the New Hope AME Church’s Young Adult Sunday School Class, taught by the late Mrs. Jimmie Lee Edwards, planted a seed, which launched the New Hope Scholarship to provide financial assistance to students attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff,” a spokeswoman said in a news release.
“God blessed their efforts and through the selfless giving of so many of you, the seed cultivated, and more than 500 students, from the continental United States and several foreign countries, have received financial assistance to attend UAPB,” she said.
The church is still assisting students through the book and tuition scholarships as well as the New Hope Endowment scholarship which is now at $200,000, thanks to supporters.
“Our success would not be possible without your support. We would also like to thank B.R.A.V.E. (Banishing Racial Animosity Vigorously) association for partnering with us again this year to provide three $500 scholarships, one of which is designated for a single parent,” the spokeswoman said.
Interested donors may send contributions made payable to: New Hope Scholarship or to UAPB, and mailed in care of Mr. and Mrs. Jean C. Edwards, 8607 Earl Chadick Road, Sherrill, AR, 72152.
