SEARK program to educate on drunk, distracted driving

Southeast Arkansas College is offering a drunk driving and distracted driving education program from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The Arrive Alive Tour from UNITE will visit SEARK at the McGeorge (MG) Hall parking lot. The program is free to SEARK students and employees and the public is invited to attend.

UNITE’s Arrive Alive program educates participants about the dangers of drunk driving and texting while driving. A simulator allows students to experience the potential consequences of drunk and distracted driving.

One of the most commonly recognized driving distractions is cell phone use. Drivers under 20 years old have the highest proportion of distraction-related fatal crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“Their lack of driving experience can contribute to critical misjudgments if they become distracted. Not surprisingly, they text more than any other age group and the numbers of young drivers who text is only increasing,” a spokesman said.
