SEARK men’s basketball 3-0 after blowout of Champion Christian

Southeast Arkansas College improved to 3-0 in men’s basketball after a 97-57 win over Champion Christian College’s reserve team Monday in Hot Springs.

Derek Magwood scored 12 of his 22 points in the second half to lead SEARK. Cayden Gibson had 12 points, and Jehu Wright and Tobias Prall each scored 10 points for the Sharks, who led 45-32 at halftime.

It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams. SEARK won the season opener 97-64 on Nov. 1 in Pine Bluff.

WOMEN: Champion Reserve 56, SEARK 50

Also in Hot Springs, Rioni Benton found her shooting touch for Champion in the second half and scored 9 of her 13 points in helping the Tigers hand the Sharks (2-1) their first loss of the season.

Benton was Champion’s only double-digit scorer. She made 2 3-point baskets in the third quarter, as the Tigers expanded a 23-22 halftime lead to 36-31. Lauren Castillo and Paris Whitfield each had 9 points in the win.

SEARK jumped to a 15-9 lead after one quarter behind Za’Nyah LeFear. The freshman guard scored 10 of her 17 points in the quarter, making 3 3-point baskets along the way.

Amethyst Price finished with 13 for the Sharks. She scored 8 in the final 10 minutes.

SEARK’s teams will host LeMoyne-Owen College at H.O. Clemmons Arena on Thursday, starting with the women’s game at 5 p.m.
