LITTLE ROCK — This weekend’s sales tax holiday on clothes and school supplies will be a shot in the arm for many small businesses, according to Sylvester Smith, state director of NFIB (National Federation of Independent Business.)
Arkansas’ sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, and ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.
The sales tax holiday allows shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain school supplies, school art supplies, school instructional materials, and clothing free of state and local sales or use tax. All retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are legally tax-exempt during the sales tax holiday, according to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration’s website.
“The sales tax holiday combined with the usual back-to-school sales are really going to put people in the mood to shop, and that’s going to help small businesses,” Smith said in a news release.
“You can find some great deals when you shop small, and you can pick up a lot of things you won’t find at the big chain stores,” Smith said. “On top of that, when you support local stores, you’re supporting the community. You’re supporting the businesses that support our schools and charities and create jobs.”
According to the release, NFIB is the nation’s leading small-business association. Details: www.NFIB.com/AR or @NFIB_AR on Twitter.
