Rison to host homesteading conference

Gardening, small farm livestock, herbs, beekeeping and more are on the agenda for the 2019 South Arkansas Homesteading Conference Saturday, April 13, at the Pioneer Village at Rison.

The gates open at 9 a.m. and the conference begins at 9:30 a.m., according to a news release.

This is the fifth year for the conference that provides educational sessions and demonstrations on a variety of practices related to achieving a sustainable lifestyle.

Topics will include natural beekeeping, converting herbs into oils and salves, fermentation, gardening methods, small farm livestock including chickens, rabbits, sheep and goats.

The conference is held at the Pioneer Village, which is also home to the Rison Community Center. The center features 27 raised beds employing various growing methods for vegetable production as well as a do-it-yourself hoop house/high tunnel, a chicken tractor, compost corral and rainwater collection system.

The conference will be presented by the Arkansas Homesteading Conference, the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Cooperative Extension Service and the Cleveland County Herald.
