Reported theft in progress leads to two arrests

Two men who reportedly broke into a storage building Wednesday morning on May Road were held by a person renting the property until the arrival of Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies, who arrested both men without incident.

Brian McIlwain, 27, and Spencer Quarles, 25, were reportedly taking metal items out of the storage building when a man renting the property blocked their truck with his own vehicle, Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said during a court hearing for McIlwain and Quarles Friday.

Sheriff’s Investigator Mickey Buffkin reported that the theft was reported at 3105 May Road at about 9:15 a.m., and when deputies arrived, they found a large tractor plow that had been inside the storage building.

Kizer said the door to the building had been forced open, and McIlwain was seen coming out of the storage building.

He said that neither McIlwain or Quarles had prior felony convictions, but both had multiple misdemeanor failures to appear in district courts in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County and Sheridan.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $10,000 bond for McIlwain and Quarles after ruling prosecutors had probable cause to charge them with breaking or entering and theft of property.

McIlwain and Quarles were told to come back to court June1 at 9 a.m.
