Reported ATV theft results in arrest

A report that an ATV had been stolen in Arkansas County on Saturday led to the arrest of a Pine Bluff man Monday and the recovery of the ATV.

Jason Simpson, 36, allegedly told police he had bought the ATV about a week ago, Pine Bluff Police Detective Scott Norton said in a probable cause affidavit presented in district court Tuesday.

According to the affidavit, a witness in Arkansas County gave officers there a license plate number, and when Pine Bluff police went to the address that the license plate returned to, they found a red Honda ATV sitting in the carport but were not able to get anyone to the door.

They went back Sunday, but the ATV was gone and the following day. Simpson was contacted and agreed to a search of the property. The ATV was recovered.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set a $2,500 bond for Simpson after ruling prosecutors have probable cause to charge him with theft by receiving. Simpson said he would hire his own attorney.
