Redfield residents are urged to conserve water

REDFIELD – Redfield residents are being encouraged to conserve water because of drought conditions, water superintendent Chuck Croy told Redfield City Council members Tuesday evening. No official action was taken by the panel because of a lack of a quorum.

Meanwhile, Croy said the municipal department has adopted conservation efforts recommended by the Arkansas Department of Health to meet vital needs, including drinking water and fire protection.

Seventy of the state’s 75 counties, including Jefferson, are under burn bans and some public water systems are asking their customers to restrict lawn watering.

Conservation steps urged by Croy:

• Comply with conservation requests; water lawns only when needed with deep soaking to avoid evaporation; water during the cool part of the day; mulch around trees and plants to slow evaporation;

• Use dishwashers and clothes washers only with full loads; don’t let faucets run unnecessarily; don’t allow water to run while brushing teeth and shaving; and check faucets, pipes and toilets for drips or leaks;

• Take short showers instead of a big bath and install water-saving shower-heads and flow restrictors.

No action was taken on one proposed ordinance and a resolution because of the council’s lack of a quorum. Aldermen John Jones and Darrell Hedden were the only aldermen in attendance.

Croy, Fire Chief Dennis McFatridge, Parks Commission Chairman Diann Smith, Police Chief Steve McFatridge and Harmon Carter, street superintendent, gave their monthly reports.
