The Greater Arkansas chapter of the American Red Cross scheduled a Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event Nov. 17 in Jefferson County.
Red Cross volunteers and local partners planned to install free smoke alarms, replace batteries in alarms and help families create escape plans. Partners include Briggs Equipment and the local fire department, according to a news release.
Red Cross asks everyone to help be part of its nationwide effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires.
“When it comes to safety, ONE is the most important number,” said Eric Sweat, Red Cross board chairman. “In 2018 alone, there have been 1,995 fire-related deaths in the United States (22 in Arkansas). The American Red Cross Home Fire campaign, through on-site safety training and smoke alarm installation, has saved a documented 472 lives since launch; however, it only takes ONE saved life to make all our efforts worthwhile. ONE Red Cross, ONE mission, ONE person at a time. Contact your local Red Cross chapter and ask how you can help make our communities safer.”
