Record-keeping workshop for ranchers to be held at Batesville

Keeping the right records is critical to maintaining a profitable cattle operation and knowing which records to keep and why is the bottom line for the workshop at the Livestock and Forestry Research Station at Batesville.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Tuesday, Oct. 16. Registration before the event is required and the deadline is Oct. 9. The cost is $20 to attend and the limited-seating event includes lunch, according to a news release.

Shane Gadberry is a professor-ruminant nutrition for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

“There is so much about a cattle operation that needs to be recorded,” Gadberry said. “For example, knowing which cows are productive is essential to keeping a ranch in the black.”

This workshop will take participants through cattle ID, what information is worth keeping, electronic record keeping options and will also have hands-on exercises.

The Livestock and Forestry Station is part of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, which conducts research as part of the Division of Agriculture’s land grant mission.
