Committees of the Jefferson County Quorum Court on Tuesday will consider a resolution declaring a vacancy in the court, which will clear the way for the appointment of a new justice of the peace.
Incumbent District Eight Justice Cleddie Shock died, and according to state law, the quorum court must first declare the position vacant before a replacement can be named.
Whomever is selected by the governor will serve out the balance of Shock’s term, which will end Dec. 31.
Two candidates have filed to run for Shock’s seat in November — Democrat Verdell Baker and Republican Roy Agee Sr. The winner of that race will take office Jan. 1.
Also on the agenda, court committees will consider two appropriation ordinances for juvenile court, two ordinances approving budgets for homeland security programs and an appropriation ordinance to deal with insurance claims from various departments.
A resolution reappointing Sandra Boone to the Jefferson County 9-1-1 Administrative Board also will be considered.
The committees will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the quorum courtroom at the county courthouse.
