Naomi Battles, 11, of Port City SPEED, earned All-American status with a fifth-place finish at the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Humble, Texas. The meet was held July 28-Aug. 2 at Turner Stadium, the Humble ISD venue. According to SPEED Coach Kathy Richards, 12,386 athletes from 33 states in the continental U.S., Jamaica and Puerto Rico, participated in the Junior Olympics. Naomi was the only Port City athlete to place, doing so in the long jump. Naomi jumped 15 feet, 2.25 inches, to earn fifth place. Athletes who finished eighth or better in events such as the long jump earned All-American status. (Special to The Commercial)
