Pine Bluff Wastewater begins major sewer rehab project

Pine Bluff Wastewater Utility has started a major 2016 Sewer Rehabilitation project, according to General Manager Ken Johnson.

He said the project will include cured-in-place (CIPP) and manhole rehab, which uses the latest technologies without excavation to pipes in streets and highways. The work will improve service to customers by preventing excess water from entering the sewer collection system.

Johnson said many of Pine Bluff sewage collection lines date back to nearly 100 years and are in dire need of repair and daily maintenance.

Insituform Technologies of Hammond, La., will be installing approximately 10,329 linear feet of CIPP liners in various locations throughout the City of Pine Bluff. Suncoast Infrastructure, of Florence, Miss., will be spraying a three-part polyurethane material in approximately 20 manholes.

The manholes vary in area locations and depth within the City of Pine Bluff.

Johnson said the total cost of the projects is $501,502.50, and the entire project is expected to be completed in 90 days.

He said this investment to the system infrastructure will extend the life of the existing pipes nearly 60 additional years.

According to the United Nations, the scope of sewage management has evolved throughout history with changes in socioeconomic conditions, city structures and the environment. Today, sewage infrastructure that is well planned and operated supports urban sanitation and related activities.

Effective sewage management is essential for nutrient recycling and for maintaining ecosystem integrity. It is also important for improving the environment through proper drainage and disposal of wastewater, preventing floods through removal of rainwater and preserving receiving water quality.
