Seven Pine Bluff women were recognized Saturday for their many community accomplishments during the second annual Hidden Figures of Pine Bluff — A Night of Honor.
The honorees included Amanda Roaf-Barron, Lula Brown Gray, Mary L. Griffin, Danna “Susie” Powell, Melissa Rice, Jacquelyn Williams McCray, and Coach Yolanda M. Scott.
Some 100 people were in attendance in the Pine Bluff Convention Center auditorium for the Women’s History Month celebration.
Each honoree was commended for the myriad of ways they provide a positive influence in Pine Bluff and Jefferson County and their many acts of kindness, both large and small, always lending a helping hand and reassuring word to those in need.
Mayor Shirley Washington’s office initiated this award in 2023. The purpose of the occasion was a celebration in conjunction with Women’s History Month, to shine a light on a few phenomenal women who typically go unnoticed while daily working behind the scenes for the betterment of the community.

Each recipient stepped to the podium in turn to say a few words of appreciation before receiving their award from Washington. A few of the honorees were unable to be present for the evening so family members accepted the award on their behalf.
Presenters for the awards were Ima Dixon, Vanessa Jackson, Mary Williams and Frederick Griffin. The program was launched with an opening prayer led by Damion Griffin followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem sung by Danny Johnson.
Following the award presentations, a special proclamation by the city of Pine Bluff was read by Washington declaring March 2 as “Roy Jones Jr. Day.” Jones, who is a former boxing champion, actor and recording artist, hosts Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Schools across the nation, providing a positive influence and outlet to young people of all backgrounds.
Jones accepted the framed proclamation.
“I came here not knowing y’all were going to make me a part of your city,” he said. “I’m very excited and figure I must be doing something right to be included among all the remarkable women you’ve honored here today.”
Washington gave closing remarks.
“Two common threads in the message of everyone who has been recognized today are the importance of God in their lives and unity in the world and this community. May we all work together to save our children,” she said.
