Pine Bluff area letter carriers announce 26th annual food drive

National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 240 of Pine Bluff will participate in the 26th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday, May 12.

Letter carriers seek the public’s help during the event. To participate, residents are encouraged to leave a bag of non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to their mailboxes before the letter carrier arrives.

As letter carriers deliver the mail May 12, they will pick up the donated food. The local food drive will benefit Neighbor to Neighbor, Salvation Army, White Hall Food Pantry and the Delta Regional Food Bank, according to a news release.

Nationally, the event is the largest single-day food drive in the U.S.

“Over the last 20 years, one billion pounds of food has been delivered by this drive which is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers,” according to the release. “The letter carriers representing the NALC receive help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees and other volunteers. The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has received a number of accolades over the years, including two Presidential Certificates of Achievement.”

Letter carriers at the Pine Bluff Main Post Office will host the local event. The NALC Branch 240 also seeks sponsors of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. All contributions will go to the food. No donation will go to the event’s overhead and all food will stay within the community, according to the release.

Monetary donations may be made to NALC Branch 240 Food Drive. Details: Roy Hunter, food drive coordinator, 870-489-8905.
