Phi Beta Sigma chapter presents awards, observes 60th anniversary

The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter, honored three educators at their recent founders’ day program.

The honorees were George Herts, Thomas Gathen and Ezra Scoggins, who had a combined total of more than 100 years of service to education and the fraternity, according to a news release.

Scoggins was also named the chapter’s Sigma Man of the Year. The fraternity’s 33rd international President Jimmy Hammock presented Scoggins the award.

Scoggins is also one of the chapter’s charter member.

“Therefore, the chapter members unanimously voted to name the prestigious award, ‘Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter, Ezra A. Scoggins, Sigma Man of the Year’ because of Scoggins’ 70 years of service to the chapter, fraternity, and the local communities,” according to the release.

The Gamma Psi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma celebrated 60 years of service to Pine Bluff and the local communities.

“The chapter was granted a charter on March 12, 1958. The purpose of the charter was to establish an alumni chapter to maintain oversight of Beta Theta Chapter, which was collegiate chapter chartered at Arkansas Agricultural and Normal College, currently known as the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, in 1947,” according to the release.

“The mission of the chapter was to foster the high ideals of the fraternity founders through the concept of brotherhood, scholarship and service as the core values, and service to humanity as its foundation. The founders envisioned a chapter built by members who believe in giving service to the community, integrity, and maintaining strong principles.

“The chapter has impacted the local communities as well as the global community. The chapter has become a training ground for world, business and community leaders. The chapter’s success and longevity is based on the depth of commitment, vision and confidence of the members,” according to the release.
